- Back Pack Mini Mac
-
(BPMM) -- a portable broadcast facility for the Lincvolt
webcasts. Housed in a backpack is a Mac Mini computer, wireless radio and batteries. - Bio-nest
-
The enclosed trailer Lincvolt
travels in now and then. Towed by a biodiesel
truck. - Biodiesel
-
Biodiesel
is a cleaner-burning diesel fuel made from natural, renewable sources such as vegetable oils. Because it is renewable and domestically produced, biodiesel fits well under the Energy Policy Act of 1992, which is in place to help ensure national energy security through replacing imported petroleum products with domestic alternative fuels. - Butt Box
-
The controller for the electric drive motor in Lincvolt
. Like an electronic throttle. Evidently it smells bad now and then... (needs more detail) - Carl
-
Joe Rockstar's buddy who appears here and there -- most recently as a special guest in a second version of the Johnny Magic video.
- CNG
-
Compressed Natural Gas - a fossil fuel substitute for gasoline (petrol), diesel, or propane fuel. Although its combustion does produce greenhouse gases, it is a more environmentally clean alternative to those fuels, and it is much safer than other fuels in the event of a spill (natural gas is lighter than air, and disperses quickly when released).
CNG
is made by compressing natural gas (which is mainly composed of methane [CH4]), to less than 1% of its volume at standard atmospheric pressure. It is stored and distributed in hard containers, at a normal pressure of 200–220 bar (2900–3200 psi), usually in cylindrical or spherical shapes.Natural gas may also be compressed at home, for use in your CNG powered vehicle, using technologies like Phill.
- DC-DC converter
-
A circuit which converts a source of direct current (DC) from one voltage level to another. It is a class of power converter. Example: If you have a 300 volt battery pack and need 12v to run a GPS, you'll need a DC-DC step-down converter.
Alternatively, if you needed 110 volts AC (say to power an old Fender Deluxe tube amp) from Lincvolt
you would add a DC-AC INverter. - Dyno
-
A dynamometer is a machine used to measure torque and rotational speed (rpm) from which power produced by an engine or electric motor, and relative MPG
, can be measured and calculated. Lincvolt
has done tests on a couple "chassis" dyno
's, where the car is anchored and the drive wheels spin the rollers of the dyno -- from which measurements are taken. Appropriately described as "the treadmill" in the blog; "Under The Hood" - Ethanol
-
Ethanol
, also called grain alcohol, is a volatile, flammable, colorless liquid. The fermentation of sugar into ethanol is one of the earliest organic reactions employed by humanity. Ethanol has a very short carbon chain and its hydroxyl group is able to participate in hydrogen bonding, rendering it more viscous and less volatile than less polar organic compounds of similar molecular weight. - Generator
-
Like a locomotive, an electric motor actually propels Lincvolt
. Power for that motor comes from battery packs. The generator
is in the engine compartment and powered by a modified Mazda rotary engine. So when you hear the rotary engine running, that's the generator charging the batteries. - HHO
-
HHO
is the product of producing hydrogen from water. While there are many skeptics surrounding the ability to reach parity producing HHO, I have high hopes for Uli Kruger. See Water Gas
. - Johnny Magic
-
Johnny Magic
had a way with metal. Had a way with machines. One day in a garage far away, he met destiny -- in the form of a heavy metal Continental.aka: Jonathon Goodwin
aka: Motorhead MessiahLincvolt
's transformation to a series hybrid
has taken place at Johnny's shop, H-Line Conversion, in Wichitaaaaaa, KS. - Lincvolt
-
A 1959 Lincoln Continental, owned by musician Neil Young and being converted into a fuel efficient vehicle by Jonathan Goodwin.
The goal is to inspire a generation by creating a clean automobile propulsion technology that serves the needs of the 21st Century and delivers performance that is a reflection of the driver's spirit. By creating this new power technology, Lincvolt
hopes to reduce the demand for petro-fuels enough to eliminate the need for war over energy supplies, thereby enhancing the security of the USA and other nations throughout the world. An electric motor propels the car. Electricity is provided my several battery packs in the trunk and engine compartment. Batteries are charged by a generator
in the engine compartment, coupled to a Mazda rotary engine. The rotary is modified to run on Biodiesel
, CNG
or gasoline. The car also has an on-board hydrogen generation system to supplement the various fuels and improve MPG
.You'll find more information at www.Lincvolt.com and through this website.
- MPG
-
Miles Per Gallon. A measure of the number of miles traveled using one gallon of fuel.
- NFH
-
No Feed Here - often posted in the Lincvolt
chat when the video feed is down during the Ustream video feeds. Viewers let others know their feed is not working either. Sometimes you only need to refresh the player. Other times the feed has gone down. - S.L.O.G.
-
Shit Load Of Gas - this box controls Uli's rig, which uses electricity to generate hydrogen from water through electrolysis. The hydrogen is sent to the rotary engine (which powers the generator
) as a gas, to improve combustion and use less fuel. Also referred to as "Water Gas
" by many on the Lincvolt
team. - Series Hybrid
-
Lincvolt
is frequently referred to as a series hybrid. In a series hybrid configuration, the combustion engine (running on a fuel) drives an electric generator
instead of directly driving the wheels. The generator both charges the battery packs and powers a UQM
electric motor that propels the vehicle. This UQM document offers a diagram and comparisons on page 13.
- Soft Start Unit
-
A circuit which reduces excess inrush current during initial power-up of the drive motor. Also see Butt Box
. - SWAG
-
You can get Lincvolt
SWAG
(t-shirts, Jackets and Caps) here. - UQM
-
UQM Technologies, Inc. (formerly Unique Mobility) is a developer and manufacturer of electric motors, generators and power electronic controllers. Lincvolt
runs a UQM propulsion motor and a UQM generator. It's most likely using UQM controllers and DC-DC converters although I have not been able to confirm that. - Water Gas
-
While I'm not certain of the science Uli Kruger is using in Lincvolt
, the "water gas
" you'll hear frequent references to in the garage is a form of hydrogen, or HHO
, extracted from water, on-board the car, via a form of electrolysis. Hydrogen is bubbled from water using electricity in water fuel cells. Then, the hydrogen is drawn off and injected into the rotary engine as a catalyst to improve combustion. The byproduct in emissions (out the tailpipe) from the hydrogen burn is water. The hydrogen can also displace up to 50% of the primary fuel, increasing efficiency of the engine driving the generator
, and effective MPG
. This system is controlled by a blue box in the engine compartment labeled S.L.O.G.
