is frequently referred to as a series hybrid. In a series hybrid configuration, the combustion engine (running on a fuel) drives an electric generator instead of directly driving the wheels. The generator both charges the battery packs and powers a UQM electric motor that propels the vehicle.This UQM document offers a diagram and comparisons on page 13.
